This app reads Sentinel smartcards for use with Network Rail’s Sentinel system.

This app is designed specifically to read Sentinel smartcards as part of Network Rail’s Sentinel system. For more information visit www.railsentinel.co.ukThe app allows anyone to check their own smartcard and also allows authorised card checkers to authenticate their team as well as undertake spot checks and check TVPs (Track Visitor Permits).Sentinel cards can be checked by scanning the QR code on the front of the card or TVP, or via NFC where this is enabled on your device. To read a Sentinel card via NFC, when prompted hold it in contact with the rear of your device until the card has been read successfully. This app can be used with any Android smartphone or tablet (Android 4 and above) with a rear-facing autofocus camera and NFC. Sentinel smartcards can be read securely using NFC, as these devices read information from the smartcard’s microchip electronically. Internet access is not required to read smartcards using NFC. The smartcard’s microchip can be checked using NFC with no internet availability whatsoever. However if internet access is available when reading a card using NFC, any updates for that card from the new Sentinel database are transferred automatically to the smartcard. All smartcard checking activities are uploaded automatically to the database when an internet connection is present or will be uploaded later when connectivity is restored by re-launching the app.To use NFC, make sure it’s enabled in the settings of your smartphone before you attempt to read any cards. The application is easy to use:1. Open the app.2. If using NFC, hold the new Sentinel smartcard to the back of your device OR click the QR code button and focus the camera on the card’s QR code.3. Confirm the sponsor for today.4. Depending on the card presented, either the card itself will be shown or a menu of options will be displayed for authorised card checkers.5. Follow the on screen options (more detailed instructions on using the app are available at www.railsentinel.co.uk)This update resolves an issue seen by some users where the app crashed when trying to record the use of a competence. It also resolves issues with the Forgotten Card process.

Worse than useless!

Lloyd Dodds

Sentinel are totally useless the app doesn't work They keep replying saying tell us what's wrong to our help desk If by end of October isn't fixed as a senior director for a rail company if my cosses can't check guys cards I will abort shifts and bill sentinel This is the main system for network rail and London underground and if they can't be bothered then we should all as rail contractors and engineers start refusing to use sentinel and the major players will have to come up with another

Terrible app, I would be more than happy to discuss further/provide evidence!

Lee Whitehead

App has so many bugs it's embarrassing, safety critical...🤣

Mike Sugden

Doesn't even let me scan it at the very start off the app. Won't read my qr or anyone else's.

Samuel Langford

With the developer recommending reviewers to contact the Help desk, i.e.people who don't produce the app, I wonder if the developer actually knows how to make this mandatory app work. Update 29/06/21 NFC usage crashes app on Google Pixel 4a. 12/06/19 After an update 2 days ago the app now doesn't even run. Modern Samsung running Android Pie. Utterly useless. Samsung XCover user. NFC works only with the first person, subsequent sign in has to be using the QR code which frequently crashes the app.

The app fails to work most of the time, and when it does work its a bit of a faff to use.

Davie Fraser

When signing out previously scanned in staff they do not show on the app, needs fixing asap
